Riding to a Hard Fall.
President Taft is generally believed to be entirely confident of re-election. Reports to that effect come from many sources. He refuses to be convinced by the arguments of those to whom his cause looks hopeless. He is not even depressed by their warnings and their low* estimates of his chances. The president’s most implacable enemies could not ask anything more than that he may continue to be in this., state of mind until election day. The confident candidate who is not victorious rides to the hardest falls sustained in politics. He suffers the worst bruises when he goes down. In this case it is difficult to understand how anyone can figure out a fair chance for the success of the Taft ticket. The conditions are such that it is unlikely to get half as many electoral votes as are needed to choose a president. The proportion may not exceed one-fourth or even one-tenth of the number required.— Cleveland Leader (Rep.).
