This is the last week of the May term of the Newton circuit court. • —<>— i S. D. Clark, democratic nominee for county recorder was a business visitor in the city Monday. Six marriage licenses were issued last month, against eight for the month previous and nine for the corresponding month of 1911. —o»— Call up 315 when in need of any legal blanks, such as mortgages, deeds, releases, etc., and they will be delivered at your office inside of -two minutes. —o— Trustees Albert Keene of Wheatfield. Shirer of Kankake, and Snip of Keener were down from the north end Monday to the county board of education meeting. Court item in Newton County Enterprise: “The Templeton vs. Skelly, Skelly vs. Hershfield, and Gibson vs. P. C. & St. L. Ry. cases were sent to Jasper county for trial.” —o— Special Judge Hanan of Lagrange came over Monday and took up the Borntrager ditch remonstrances. Yesterday morning, accompanied by the various attorneys, he went out over the line of the proposed ditch. —O —• Jesse E. Wilson of Hammond is here as counsel for some of the remonstrators in the Borntrager ditch case. Mr. Wilson has been appointed assistant sergeant-at-arms of the republican national convention at Chicago. —o— All the township trustees were in to the beard of education meeting Monday except Kight, of Union; Selmer, of Gillam, and Parker of Hanging Grove. Nothing of particular importance was done at the meeting. —o—■ Marriage licenses issued: June 1, Frank John Alter, son of Join Q. Alter of IBeusselaer, aged 23, occupation painter, to Kate Crommell Nevill, daughter of Henry C. Nevil! of Rensselaer, occupation housekeeper. First marriage for each. —o*—
Attorney Geo. E. Hershman, formerly of Rensselaer, has been endorsed by the Lake county democrats for joint-representative for Lake and Newton counties. George is a good clean young man and would make an able representative.
The case against Wm. P. Michael of Jordan tp., on a charge preferred by his sister-in-law, Mrs. Harry Oook, has been sent to Squire Bussell’s court in Hanging Grove tp., where it will come up for trial Friday next. My. Michael asserts that the whole thing is a frame-up to prejudice his wife’s father, who has considerable property, against him. —o— John Z. Jdhnston, an old and well known citizen of Newton county where he had resided for many years and had served three terms as county auditor and was serving his second term> as county assessor, died at his home in Kentland May 24, aged 76 years. My. Johnston was an old soldier and had been a member of the Masonic order for forty-three years. —o—-■ The county commissioners finished up the entire business of the term Monday and adjourned. Kersey stone road; contract for No. 3 awarded to Tunis Snip for $2,499. Geo. Putts petition for highway; report filed and expense account allowed. Continued for objections. Henry J. Hendricks petition for highway; Frank Hershman, John O’Connor and Robert Zick appointed viewers, to meet June 17 at office of Joel F. Spriggs and qualify and report on or before first day July term. John J. Lawler stone roads in Union tp.; report of superintendent approved and he is.allowed $198.55, and residue after paying all court costs and expenses to go to Josiah Hopper to apply on service account. Cause dropped and superintendent discharged. Same order in Lawler county line road, except allowance to supt. is $94. ’ Contracts for poor farm supplies awarded to John Eger, groceries, $175.52; Roth Bros., meats, $37.50; E VanArsdel & Co., dry goods, $44.fr5. Trustee May of Carpenter tp., given permission to extend additional poor relief tp Mrs. W. S. Bartlett not to exceed sls per quarter. Engineer directed to prepare I plans and specifications for six new bridges in Barkley tp. Interest on county funds for the month of May was reported as follows: First Nat Bk. Remington.... 66.13 Bank of Wheatfield.. 31.00 Total $482.71 Fees .collected for quarter reported as follows: Auditor, $76.10; Recorder, $801.85; Sheriff, $204.95; i clerk (one month) $67.35.
