Mr. and Mrs. Jud Adams and Barney Maienbrook and . Qlen Baker returned home yesterday from Indianapolis where they spent a couple of days at the state fair. Mrs. Tesse Hiate of Kalamazoo, Mich., who has been visiting here for the past two months with her sister, Mrs. Vern kins and family, left Thursday for her home. One thousand dollars is also appropriated for a new barn at the poor farm. It is intended to make the barn 40x60, using the material in the old barn as far as it will go. The Monon took in at this station over $4,500 for tickets during the month of August, and so far this month the sales have run up to about S9OO. Surely, this road is a paying proposition. Rev. J. P. Green, Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Steward and Mrs. John Kresler and H. O. Harris were among those from here who attended the Monticello Baptist Association meeting held at Goodland Thursday. John M. Knapp went to Chicago Thursday where he met W. F. Danner, wife and son, of Meadeville, Pa., who accompanied him here on a few days visit. They are on their way home from a visit in Corning, lowa. Fendig ancl other relatives for some time, went to Chicago Wednesday to spend a few days visiting relatives and friends before returning home. O. K. Ritchey met with a slight mishap Tuesday evening that delayed his getting home for a short time. When near the Washington street bridge the •horse he was driving scarced and i lsWerved to one side, breaking the buggy up considerably, but not injuring Mr. Ritchey.
Mrs. Joe Nagel returned yesterday from LafayetJe where she was called by the critical condition of her sister, Sister Modesta, of Olpe, Kan., who came to Lafayette a few weeks ago on her vacation and was taken sick with appendicitis. She was to be operated on Thursday. i i ■■■■ iii M A movement is being made to establish an alley east and west through the block just south of the Knapp livery barn. A private alley has been in use there for a number of years, but it is in bad condition, and an effort will be made to have it made a public alley and to improve it. When he brought it in it bore the inscription “Tom Marshall” in capital letters on its .-ide, but, we suspect John carved the letters there instead of their having grown on the melon. Returning from an automobile ride Tuesday evening Mrs. Harvey Moore found a number of relatives and friends gathered at her home to remind her of her birthday. An enjoyable evening was spent, refreshments Wefe were served, and a’ number of beautiful and useful present.*, were received by Mrs. Moore. Mrs. J. H. Holden and Mrs. Hale Warner entertained an even three dozen guests at ( the home of the former, the first of the week in honor of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Thomas of Chicago. In the four-handed euchre that was played by the guest«. E. D. Rhoades and Mrs. George E. Mt/rray carried off the prizes.
Oscar Byerly of Fostoria, 0,, who has been engaged in the lightning rod business in Barkley tp. with Grant Davissqn, reTurhed' Home yesterday for a short visit. While here he purchased a couple of car Joads of hand-picked winter apiples, oi rather, contracted for them and will have them shipped to his home in Ohio.
