Wanted to Take Up Checks By Giving Note.

While in the city Wednesday Eugene Purtelle, . the railroad promotor, wanted to fix it up with some of the more important ones who are still holding his “no funds” checks by giving his personal note for thirty days and taking up the checks, but he did not find any of the checkholders so easy, so far ; as learned. One of the parties consulted a banker regarding the advisability of his turning over the checks and takinga' note, arid the banker told him to hold on to the checks; he might get after Purtelle on a criminal action by the checks, but it would be all off if he gave them up for the note. He still has the checks.
