fRAUDS AGAINST THE CUSTOMS CAN NEVER BE STOPPED BY THE IMPOSITION OF FINES. THE MOMENT THAT A BIG IMPORTER GOES TO JAIL FOR THIS CLASS OF OFFENSE IT WILL STOP WITH A BANG. The United States district attorney has felt very strongly that the courts should INFLICT PRISON SENTENCES on importers who PERSIST in violating the law. Some prison sentences have been imposed on customs officials who have been dishonest and upon some of the smaller importers found guilty of frauds. But NOT ONE PRISON SENTENCE has been meted out to one of the LARGER IMPORTERS who have been prosecuted foj un dervaluation frauds. . The moment that a prison sentence is inflicted on one of the larger importers for undervaluation this class of customs fraud will stop short. " ■ ■ I feel that we are ENTITLED to the support of the courts in the only way that will effectively stop these LONG CONTINUED Violations of the law. Neither the United States district attorney nor myself is in the least DISCOURAGED, and we shalj CONTINUE to prosecute before the courts tho frauds which we believe should be presented to that tribunal.
