PATRICK HALLAGAN DEAD
Aged and Well Known Citizen of Jasper County Succumbs to Gangrene Sunday Night Patrick Hallagan, aged about 94 years, a well known and highly respected farmer and stockman, died at his home east of town at 11:40 Sunday night, July 2, 1911, death being due to an infection of one of the great toes and old age, from which infection he had been ill for the last six or eight weeks. The deceased was born in Waterford, Ireland, about the year 1817. He received his education in the school of his native land, graduating with honors from Dublin University. 'At the age of 22 he departed from his native land for this country, landing at New Orleans 72 years ago. He traveled extensively, following construction work as contractor. His main work was building of roads and large drainages. In the year 1854 he came to this county and has since lived here and was very successful as a farmer and stockman. Patrick Hallagan was united early in life to Honora Welsh at Cincinnati, Ohio, in the holy bonds of matrimony. From this union nine children were born.
His wife departed this life four years ago. The following children survive him: Mrs. Katie McQuilin, Fairmont, Ind.; Richard Hallagan, Ottawa, Ill.; Mary Delouest, Gccaka, Patrick Hallagan, Dunkirk, Ind!’; Joseph Hallagan, of Rensselaer, and John, James and Maggie, nesiding at the home place. In his death the county loses one of its pioneer settlers. He was a highly respected citizen and loved by all who knew him. He was a very faithful member of St. Augustine’s Catholic church. It was always his delight if he could in any way assist in furthering the cause of this church. The funeral services were held at thg St. Augustine's church this morning (Wednesday) 1 at 9 o’clock, 1 earing the country home of deceased at 8 o’clock, and interment made in Calvary cemetery, the Rev. Christian Daniel officiating. His five sons and a son-in-law served as pall-bearers.
