THE POPULATION OF HOOSIERDOM /■'■■■ - ■ ■ Cities Are Growing At Expense ot Smaller Communities. COMPARED WITH 1900 CENSUS One of the Moet Significant Points of the Report on Indiana Just Made by the Director of the Census Is the Fact That the Rural Districts Are Not Holding Their Own in Population. Washington special: Indiana’s census returns may be accepted as proof of the oft repeated assertion that the tendency of the modern population shift Is toward the cities., While the population of the state as a whole has increased at about a normal rate during the past decade, it is true that more than half the counties in the state show a decrease in population. While most of this decrease is due to the undoubted tendency toward the closer communal relation that is found in the cities, the failure of natural gas has had the effect to decrease the population of several of the counties in the gas belt, where a large industrial population was compelled to seek elsewhere for work upon the closing down of many factories that depended on gas for fuel. E. Dana Durand, chief director of the census, has just made announcement of the population of the state by counties, townships, and incorporated places, cities and towns. Of the latter there are 473 in the state, 49 erf which contain more than 5,000 population. Of the ninety-two counties but thirty-six show a gain in population, as follows:
