BAD LUCK OF CHICKEN THIEVES.
It is rumored that some chicken thieves came to grief the latter part of the week some place between Rensselaer and Goodland, the precise location not given. According to the story told, a farmer was awakened by some unusual noise, and on getting up he saw a team standing in the i“oad near his barn. He had no weapons, but went out and climbed into the wagon and waited developements. Presently two men came from his chicken house loaded down with chickens. He yelled at them: “What in h— are you doing with my chickens?’’ and the men dropped the chickens and ran as if old Nick was after them leaving their rig behind. This is a story that is current at Lee and McCoy sburg, which vicinity has suffered greatly by depredations of a gang that will soon eitherleave that locality or be driven out at the point of shotguns by the law-abbiding people, if we are to credit the freely expressed sentiment of the victims of the prowling thieves. We are unable to vouch for the truth of this story, but it is indeed hoped that sortie evidence will soon be obtained that will send the gang where they will not further molest anyone.
