WHO IS JOHN CARTER?
Danville Paper Says Man of That Name Was Held Up and Robbed. The Danville, 111., Commercial News of Feb. 1, says : As the result of placing confidence in a chance acquaintance, J. H. Carter, who lives in Rensselaer, Ind., is a poorer and sadder, but wiser man, for the chance acquaintance turned .out to be a highwayman. Carter who claims to be a post card salesman, • came to Danville a few days ago, and being a stranger, and lonely, he dropped into an East Main street thirst emporium to purchase something that would cheer him up. While in the saloon he met a white man, a smooth-talking individual, who convinced the Hoosier that they were old friends, had met somewhere, and that he was dee-lighted to meet him. Carter left his chance acquaintance in the saloon, and went to a five-cent show. After leaving the amusement house he strolled along the street and had gone but a short distance when he . again met the man who claimed to know him, and who proposed a walk. Carter consented and the two strolled east on East North Street. Near the Wabash railroad crossing a negro approached and when he got opposite Carter he reached out a strong hand and gripped him by the throat. Carter called to his white friend for help, and got it, but in a different -way than he expected. Instead of attacking the negro the chance acquaintance helped himself to the contents of Carter’s pockets, which consisted of about 35 in silver. The robbers fled and Carter hastened to police headquarters to report his loss. Inquiry fails to locate anyone by the name of name of John Carter in Rensselaer.
