THE CHRISTMAS NEMBER OF NATIONAL MONTHLY.
The Christmas number of National Monthly is a beauty. The front cover in three colors is by Georgs J. Hare and shows Santa Claus in his workshop. The frontpieee is a beautiful full page drawing entitled ‘‘Christmas Morning,” by Mildred C. Green. In this number Chairman Mack of the Democratic National Committee yutlines the plan that will undoubtedly be followed by the Democrats in Congress. This article is written by Chairman Mack following a consultation with Hon; Champ Clark and other Democratic leaders. “Christmas on the Island,” is the title of a very pretty story from the pen of Deshler Welch, a writer well known to the readers of Scribner'S. Cut some i:a<-ou uiio small dice and toss in a frying pan till crisp. Take large slices of freshly baked bread and toast a delicate brown, butter well aotf place on each slice a strip of cheese . cut thin arid nearly as large as the bread. Sprinkle with paprika and slip into the oven to remain till the cheese is sizzling. Remove and throw some of the bacon ever and serve at once. Have the plates hot. Brown Bread. Sift One rounded teasisiqnful of soda ahd one of salt with one cupful of cornmeal. Add one cupful rye meal and onp of grains up and mix well to get!'or. Mix two rrsd a ha If .cupfuls of sour milk with two-thirds of a cupful of molasses and stir into the dry mixture. Add rti iits to suit. Steam one and a half hours in small cans. Lotion For Chapped Lips or Skin. Finest Russian isinglass, one-half ounce; glycerin, two ounces; rosewater, six ounces; oil of rose, ten drops. Bathe the face with tepid water, then rub in tbe jelly of rose. Codfish Souffle. ‘ Cream codfish in usual way and add beaten yolks of three eggs, mixing thoroughly. Fold in whites of three eggs beaten dry.
