ALONE AT SAGAMORE.

Alas, how curious it seems To sit alone in my mansion After my irredescent dreams « Of lordship and expansion! I thought that anything I said The populace would tickle; That they would follow where I led. How strange my views, or fickle! I s’posed the doughty deeds I’d wrought, Engage! in faunal slaughter, Would charm and captivate their thought. The way they really ougliter; And that the honor I’d received Front potentates and princes Would cinch my business; but I’rti grieved At what the fact evinces. I stormed the east, I stormed the west v ® With views to suit each section Alt hought they didn’t jibe, I guessed The people’s wild affection “ Wouldn't let them stop to analyze The manifest divergence, Arm I their wits could hypnotize With my emphatic | urgenee. I never dreamed they’d see my dodge ' O’ bein’ standpat-progressive; I whooped her up for Cabot Lodge With eloquence . excessive; For Beveridge, too; I filled the air With vocables explosive; And swatted Anderspn for fair With epithets corrosive. Then in and out and pp and down This state I fumed and shouted, In city, village, grange and town Myself I boldly touted; At Wall street shied a thousand bricks; * At Murphey waxed indignant, And uttered calumnies at Dix With energy malignant. I thought the luck I'd always had Would fool the folk and dazzle; But lo! Im duecedly in bad, I’m licked —I—to a frazzle! I’m likq a bull that’s wounded sore That slinks from every fellow Where he can be alone and roar, And swear and glare and bellew. —From the private meditations of I Ego Ipsisimus, as reported by Peleg Hopkins.—lndianapolis News.
