COST OF LIVING AND MORTGAGES.

Commenting on mortgage statistics compiled by the Mate statistician. the Indianapolis Sun (Rep) says: “Bread and butter topics are the causes and the possible out r come of the debt-incurring proclivities of Indiana people, which Cave been made manifest bv the

doubling of the amount of mortgages in 1909 over 1908, as shown by the state bureau of statistics. Where it will end is the question most frequently asked.. And there are others who ask : are we bumping along toward a panic.” the largest increase in mortgages is upon city and town property, bpt there also has been an increase in the number and amount of farm mortgages. Doubtless there X more than one reason for the enormous growth of mortgage obligations, but it is conceded that the tremendous and alarming rise in the cost of livrig is the chief cause. ' And this rise in the cost of living may be traced directly to the unholy prices which the trusts impose upon the people tinder the protection of the wicked tariff laws enacted by the Republican party. The only way to secure a reform of these laws is through the Democratic party. It is clear that the people now understand that this is so.
