BIG FIRE AT WHITING.
Standard Oil Company Suffers $200,000 Loss Sunday Night. Whiting, Ind.. July 18.—All of Lake county looked o'n while a spectacular fire that started in the engine room of the Standard Oil Company's factory here last night destroyed the grease plant at a loss of $200,000. Many workmen are out of employment as a result. The fire was the most disastrous that ever broke out in Whiting, and it was not until 7 o’clock this morning that firemen had the flames well under control. Foiv a time the whole town was threatened and the fife departments of the Sandard Oil Company and Whiting were unable to cope with tfiie flames from the outset, and companies from Hammond. Gary and South Chicago were hurried to the scene. By hard work adjacent property was saved. A high wind was blowing off Lake Michigan and the flames were plainly visible for a radius of thirty miles: The Standard Oil Company’s works in St? Louis suffered a heavy loss by fire last week and the plant at Whiting was being worked to its capacity to turn out the double number of orders. The loss is covered by insurance.
