MEAT DUTY MUST GO.
Baltimore Butchers Insist That This Is the Only Remedy. The Baltimore Butchers’ Abattoir and Live Stock company decided unanimously at a meeting held on* April 14 that the only way to bring down the price of beef is to take off the fluty of 27% per cent on live cattle and allow of free importation from Mexico, Canada and South America. That is a remarkable pronouncement coming from the butchers. They happen to be close to the people, and the people naturally vent their anger upon them, thinking that they are to blame, but they positively state that they make smaller profits now than when prices were lower, declaring that the beef trust reaps the advantage. One of the representative butchers made the following statement: “The packers bought on shares last fall. They were able, owing to existing conditions, to purchase at a reasonable figure. Cattle food was at that time high, and the cattle producers w’ere anxious not to carry their Stock over during the winter. This gave the meat trust the advantage of the situation, and the producers cared for the herds on provender supplied by the trust during the winter.” The association will again meet shortly, and it is its intention to take the matter up with Maryland’s representatives in both houses of congress. I In this action It will have the bulk of the consumers with It. It Is well seen by this time that the duty of 27% per cent on live cattle and the duty of 1% cents per pound en fresh meat do not benefit either the consumer, the farmer or the butcher, but only the trustWhen the matter is brought before congress It will be-interesting to see who are the congressmen who represent the trust rather than the people.
