JOHN CALVIN PORTER.
John Calvin Porter was born near Gabon, Ohio, Oct. 31, 1842, and died at Rensselaer April 19, 1910, aged 67 years, 5 months and 10 days. He was one of a family of nine children, of whom only two si.sters, Mrs. Robert Yeoman and Mrs. Lucy Clark are now living, both of Rensselaer. With his parents he came to Jasper county, Ind., in 1848, and for about eight years resided three miles northwest of Rensselaer, when the family returned to Ohio, where he resided until the opening of the civil war, when he enlisted in Company C, 15th O. V. 1., Aug. 30, 1861, and served until Dec. 20, 1864, when his time expired and he was honorably discharged. • In 1867 he with his brother moved back to Jasper county, where he lived on a farm “3% miles northwest of Rensselaer. On February 8, 1869, he was -married to Mrs. Augustus H. Salter. To this union one son, Charles H., was born. He was also a father to a son of his wife by a previous marriage, Wm. A. Salter, now a resident of Kansas City, Mo. In 1882 Mr. Porter left the farm and moved to. Rensselaer where he has since resided. His first wife died Dec. 6, 1887, and on June 17, 1891, he was married to Miss Carrie Irwin, who has been his "Constant companion since/ and who with his two sisters, son and step-son, and other relatives and friends, are left to mourn their loss. In 1888 he united with the Presbyterian church of Rensselaer, and he has lived a consistent Christian life ever since. In 1906 he was elected' to serve'the church as ruling elder, and his life has brought honor to that office. For several years Mr. Porter was in very poor health, but for the past few years he has been improving and was more ljke his - former" self. He was agtive and energetic doing his duty in the church and in the home until the very day that the Master called him Home. The funeral was held Thursday at 3 p. m., from the Presbyterian church, Rev. J. C. Parrett conducting * the .services. Burial was made in ~ Weston cemetery, the G.. A.
