A ROUSING CONVENTION.
Big Turnout and a Good Ticket Nominated. MUCH ENTHUSIASM SHOWN By Delegates and All Seemed to Feel That the Taxpayers of Jasper County Desired a Change and This Was the Year for It—Executive Committee to Fill Vacancies 6f Treasurer and Surveyor. - I .
The Democratic county convention Thursdav was the best attended and most enthusiastic democratic convention held in Jasper county, in many years. Every precinct was represented, and for most part by full delegations. A preliminary meeting was held at the east court room at 11 a. m., and committees appointed on credentials and organization. It was decided, in vieW of the fact that no district or state convention had yet been held,, not to have any resolutions committee. Geo. O. Stembel was made temporary chairman of this preliminary meeting and F. E.' Babcock secretary. The chair appointed F. M. Welsh, N. S. Bates and Henry Misch on the Credentials committee, -and John Finn, Isaac Right, W. R. Nowels, Ellis Jones and Lee Glazebrook on the Committee on Organization. The meeting then adjourned until 1 p. m., when it again reassembled and the committees reported, the Credentials finding no contests and deciding that each precinct be permitted to vote its full delegate strength. Committee on organization recommended Geo. *O. Stembel for permanent chairman and F. E. Babcock for secretary, with other democratic editors as assistant secretary's; that the county combe empowered to fill any vacancies on the' ticket and that the rooster be the emblem of the party. Both reports were adopted, Nominations were next taken up. The roll of precincts was called for clerk, and North Union presented the name of Felix R. Erwin, a well known young general merchant of Fair Oaks, and there being no other nominations Mr. Erwin was nominated by acclamation. Carpenter tp., presented the name of Ammon Beasley for auditor, a most excellent and well qualified mall, and he was also nominated by acclamation. „ For treasurer no candidate was found and this office was passed and will be filled oil the ticket by the committee. For sheriff Wm. I. Hoover of Mlarion, wRo was only defeated by 61 vote's two years ago when a candidate for the same office, was nominated. For county assessor Bert Van-
dercar, an excellent man who served two terms, as township assessor of Kankakee tp,, his home, was nominated. No candidate developed for cotfnty surveyor,- and this office was passed. Dr. Fyfe of Wheatfield was nominated for coroner. For commissioners Ist. district Wheatfield tp., presented the name of John Bowie of Wheatfield, and Walker tp., —through Mr. Lee E. Glazebrook of Marion, who requested to present his name—that of Wm. H. Hershman, one of Walker’s most up-to-date and progressive farmers. After Mr. Hershman’s name was presented Mr, Bowie withdrew and Mr. Hershman was nominated by acclamation. Chas. F. Stackhouse, former trustee of Marion tp., was nominated for commissioner from the 2d district. For county councilmen Geo. O. Stembel of Wheatfield; Grant Davisson of Barkley; L. Strong of Marion and J. F. Spriggs of Walker were nominated from the four councilmanic districts, respectively. Councilmen at Large, George Fox of Carpenter; George Besse of Remington, Joseph Nagel of Marion, were nominated. Delegates •to the state convention—N, Littlefield, J. J. Hunt, Simon Fendig, George O. Stembel, W. L. Nowels, E. P. Honan, John McCullough, p. O’Reilly. Delegates to Congressional convention—B. N. Fendig, John Ryan, Simon Fendig, George O. Stembel, W. R. Nowels, N. Littlefield, George Besse, *«Ellis Jones. S T r Owing to the fact that the north end delegates desired to return home on the afternoon train it was moved and supported that the executive committee be empowered to name the delegates to the representative and judicial conventions, and the meeting adjourned.
Notes. 'N. Osborne was’ down frojn Gillam, for the first time in about a year. You just can’t keep him away from a democratic convention. In the event any of the delegates to the state or district convention cannot attend they are allowed to name their own alternates. No one knew that Squire Dickinson of Carpenter was such a witty and polished speaker until he jjnade himself beard in the convention. F. R. Erwin, the candidate for clerk, is an old school teachei, a bright, active, well qualified man for the place, and he should make- a good race. We missed the genial face of E. W. Allen of Wheatfield. Mr. Allen has recently had a stroke of paralysis, and is in very poor health, we are sorry to say. The state convention will be held next week ..at Indianapolis, but neither the time or place for holding the various district conventions has yet been decided upon,. Due notice will be given of each. 7 . Delegates to the congressional convention after some discussion, were instructed to vote for Hon; E. P. Honan of Rensselaer for congressman, should he. be a candidate, so long as he was a candidate before the convention. Uncle John Tillett of Gillam, Joel F. Spriggs of Walker and Uncle J. C. Norman of Marion, who seldom jf ever miss a democratic county convention, were out and ’seemed to enjoy it as well as they did forty years agu. Notwithstanding there was heavy frost the night before, Simon Fendig came down from the n6rth end wearing a straw hat —wanted to make us believe that it was the’good old summer time in the Kankakee region, evidentL v - Dennis O’Reilly Mr. Beasley a well deserved compliment- when -he placed the latter in nomination for auditor. Mr. Beasley has held several- local offices in the town of Remington and . was always . a winner, although he had a big majority to overcome. AVhen W. R. Nowels placed C.
F. Stacklionse in .nomination for district, lie said Mr. Stackhouse had made one of the best and commissioner from the second most popular trustees Marion tp., had erer had, a fact which cannot be gainsaid by anyone, and that the scripture says that he who has been faithful over a few things shall be made ruler over many. And no better man could be found for this place than Air. Stackhouse. Lee E. Glaxelxook, in prer senting the name of W. H. Hefshman for commissioner from the first district, made a neat little speech. Mr. Hershman is a man of affairs, a good levelheaded business man .and besides being an extensive farmer and stock-grower, is the greatest fancy poultry breeder in Jasper county, his M. B. turkeys and Black Langshan chickens having a national reputation. He will make a gooTI commissioner. The question of instructing delegates to the state convention to vote for the plan of the state convention to name a candidate for United States senator provoked quite a little discussion, and it was finally decided that the convention vote by precincts on the proposition, for or against. After Barkley, Carpenter, Gillam and Hanging Grove had voted unanimously in favor of the plan the objections were: withdrawn and the delegates go instructed “for.”
