An Inflated Unreality.

“After sixteen years of the Dingley tariff,” said Speaker Cannon at Knoxville, la., a few weeks ago, “we had brought the rest of the world $6,000,000,000 in our debt” That is roughly the measure of exports over imports during that period. It will next be in order for Mr. Cannon to describe the nature of the claims we hold in such huge amount against the outside world and when or how they are to be paid, for in the same time we have been selling stocks and bonds to Europe rather than taking their stocks and bonds. When your Uncle Joe gets to that stage of his proposition be will be obliged to disclose its utter emptiness. That mighty trade balance in our favor is simply an inflated unreality.—Springfield Republican.
