JOHN R. WALSH IN PRISON.

Aged Chicago Banker Now “No. 6861” at Ft. Leavenworth. •phn R. Walsh, the former railroad magnate, bank president and Supposed to be multi-mllUoniare, began his sentence of fiye years imprisonment, for- violating the national banking laws, at Ft. Leavenworth federal prison Wednesday.* His numbet hi “6861,” and he is perhaps the oldest and most distinguished member of the, numerous “bankers’ colony” sojourning there. * Walsh is now 72 yeans old, and since sentence was first pronounced, some two years ago, he has doggedly fought it off until the United States supreme court passed on the case and he could go no higher. When Walsh’s bank went to the wall a few years ago—or was about to go—only the united aid of the other Chicago banks in taking over its securities and guaranteeing its liabilities averted tne worst finaficial panic that city had ever seen. It looks tough to see a man who has apparently reached the topmost round of business and success end his days in a felon’s cell, but the way of the transgressor is hard.

For good behavior Mr. Walsh may obtain a mitigation of sentence to three years * and eight months.
