M’CANN AIDE WINS FREEDOM

Prosecution Drops Case pf Detective Griffin—lnspector Gets Stay. Chicago, Dec. 3.—Detective Sergeant Jeremiah Griffin of the Desplaines street police, charged by the state with assisting Inspector Edward McCann in the collection of graft from residents of the west side levee* has escaped trial. Assistant State’s Attorney Crowe said the state was compelled to “nolle pros” the case because its witnesses had turned against it and therefore a successful prosecution was impossible. While these proceedings were in progress, Inspector McCann secured an arrest of judgment until the case could be taken to the supreme court on a vrit of sppersedeas. Detective Griffin, after being set free, visited the office of Chief of Police Stewart and presented himself for duty.
