A DEMOCRAT WHO HOLDS THREE OFFICES.

The writer had a pleasant hour’s chat Saturday with Z. T. Merritt, well known to many of our readers In the south part of the county, who with his wife and sister were visiting the families of John Merritt and Walter Forbes. Taylor left Goodland some 18 years ago, and located near what is now Miami, Fla., a town now but thirteen years old, but with some 8,000 population. He was superintendent of schools for

eight years, and then gave that up and got into politics a little. He is now the clerk of the circuit court there and has three deputies under him. There the clerk is ex-officio auditor and recorder. He receives no stated salary except $1,200 per year as clerk or secretary for the board of commissioners, but the fees and salary last year were about $7,200, netting him a little better than $4,000. He is serving his second term in this office now, we believe.
