AMBIA PARTIALLY BURNED.
Flames Sweep Through the Village, Causing Loss of $20,000. Attica, Ind., Aug. 25.—Fire, which originated about 6 o'clock last night in the heart of the village of Ambia. destroyed five buildings, causing a loss of about $20,000. The buildings destroyed were Gassaway Bros.’ drug store, loss $4,000; Tuffey Bros.' 1 ’ hardware store, $lO,oOO; office, barn and residence of Dr. Gamble, $5,000; small biulding occupied by M. R. Boyer with a bowling alley, and also a store building belonging to the latter. Ambia has but little fire protection. a chemical engine and a bucket brigade composing the department, and for a time the situation was serious. A dispatch was sent to Hoopeston, 111., for the fire department and the engine and apparatus had just been loaded on a special car when word came that the flames were under control. The fire started in the barn of DrGamble, where it. is believed some small boys had been playing with matches. All of the above losses are partially covered by insurance.
