NEWTON COUNTY HORSE THIEF
Brought Here Wednesday and Lodged In Jail To Await Trial. Fred Brown wnted for the theft of a horse and buggy stolen from Oliver Woods of near Kentland last Saturday night, was captured at Rigde Farm, 111., and brought here for safe keeping Wednesday by Deputy Sheriff Zumbaugh of Newton county. (When captured Brown was in an 'lntoxicated condition and was offering the rig for sale at $45, about one-third of its actual value. He stated that he secured the outfit from horse-traders in Danville. His actions aroused the suspicion of the liveryman to whom he would have sold the horse, 'and the opportune passing of a deputy sheriff made Brown’s capture easy. When arrested he gave his name as John Brown, but later weakened and gave the officers a history of the stealing. Two watches, a gentleman’s and a ladies’, and a few other small trinkets were found on him -when he was searched by the officers, but he refused to disclose their ownership. Brown w r as formerly the proprietor of a restaurant in Goodland and was conducting a successful business until booze started him crooked, it is said. He is only about 21 years of age.
