POPULATION HAS DOUBLED.
Lake County Has Twice as Many Citizens as in 1900. Lake county has doubled its population since 1900, according to the figures compiled by the Lake County Directory Company. The present population of that county is 76,454, iwhile in 1900 it was 37,892, making a gain in the last nine years of 38,562. The majority of the cities of the county have doubled their population, and two of the centers of population—Gary and Indiana Harbor—hardly existed at that time. The population of Hammond was found to be 22,446; Gary, 11,391; East Chicago, 8,330; Indiana Harbor, 8,130; Whiting, 6,281; Hobart, 1,603; Crown Point, 2,624; Lowell, 1,311, and Tolleston, 1,163. Along with this remarkable growth in population, the number of saloons has grown. In Hammond there are 219 saloons, or one to every 100 people. Indiana Harbor comes next with 122 saloons, or one to every 70 inhabitants. East Chicago is third with 94 saloons, Whiting has 56, Crown Point 12, Hobart 12, Lowell 4. and there are 59 in the remainder of the county. This makes a total of 548 in the county.
