WHERE WERE THE HOLES?

A Monticello editor was in Chicago this week and seeing a Panama hat in a shop window that looked good to him, stepped inside the store and asked the price of the lid. “Sixteen dollars,” replied the clerk. The editor took another look at the hat, and then asked: “Where are the holes?” “The holes?” said the clerk in a puzzled tone “What for?" “Why,” replied the editor, “the holes for the ears of the ass who would pay sixteen dollars for a hat like that.”
