Secretary of the Treasury Introduced to New York Bankers. New York, May 14. —Franklin MacVeagh, secretary of the treasury, was the guest of George S. Terry, assistant treasurer of the United States at New York, at a private dinner at the Union League club. This is the first function the secre tary has attended outside of Washington since his appointment and the occasion was used to introduce MacVeagh to th# prominent banking presidents of New York, all of whom had been invited.

Brief speeches were made by the secretary, Cornelius N. Bliss, J. Edward Simmons, president of the Fourth National bank; A. Barton Hepburn, president of the Chase National bank, and General Brayton Ives, president of the Metropolitan Trust company. “From the point of view of the secretary of the treasury,” said MacVeagh, “the business situation throughout the country is a very hopeful one. We are not worrying about the deficit. The main question, perhaps, is will the new tariff answer the expectations of the people.”
