FORCES MAYOR TO QUIT
Los Angeles Paper Causes Harper to Take Name From Ballot. Los Angeles, March 12.—Mayor A. C. Harper has resigned. He declined to explain. He had been recalled from office by a petition signed by 10,000 voters because of various allegations of misconduct. / In an extra edition of a paper there appeared a letter written by the mayor to the paper’s manager. It said: “In fulfillment of my obligations entered into with you, I hereby notify you that this day I have requested the county clerk to withdraw my name from the ballot.” In explanation the paper states that “the reasons for the drastic action are unpublishable,” and that the step was taken after searching the mayor’s official and private record in order to protect the fair name of Los Angeles.
