LEGISLATIVE PROCEEDINGS.
The legislature will adjourn next Monday. Governor Marshall has notified both houses that he will receive no bills after 12 o’clock midnight, of Friday night, as provided by law. They closing days are apt, to be busy ones, and from present indications, a very good record will be made by the present body. Gov. Marshall vetoed the Sunday baseball bill, principally, it is understood because he thought it let the bars down for almost every other kind of sport on Sunday. Another bill has been introduced that is said to correct the defects in the old bill, and, if it escapes ■ the governor’s axe, is likely to become a law.
The senate, by a bare margin of three--votes, has passed the Linton, Gary and Morgan and Clay county court bills over Governor Marshall’s veto. Senator Halleck voted for each of these bills. The bill known as the Merchants’ accounting bill, providing for a uniform system of book-keep-ing throughout the various counties of the state and providing for an inspection of the various offices at any time, was passed in the Senate Monday, but six senators voting against the motion to concur m the House amendments, the senator from this district being one of the six.
The bill requiring that vacancies on a jury shall be filled by the Jury commissioners, who shall draw names to fill such vacancies, has passed both branohes of the legislature. The bill is aimed at the professional jurymen who hang about court rooms especially to get “called” by the bailiff, and who are usually particular political friends of the sheriff or his deputies. Another measure that has passed both houses with little opposition is that to enable a person convicted of felony not punishable by death to give bond and obtain release pending decision on appeal to a higher court.
The Tomlinson-Proctor liquor license bill to repeal the county option law, limit saloons to incorporated towns or cities, not more than one saloon to 500 population, raise the license fee and place other restrictions about the business, is still pending in the senate, and the chances for its getting through are not encouraging to its friends. The Democrat does not believe the present legislature will repeal the county option law, and has not believed so at any time.
