To Raise Price of Cigarettes. New York, Feb. 26. —The price of cigarettes, it is stated, is to be raised by dealers. Manufacturers are said to be threatening an advance owing to the increased price of tobacco.

PREDICTS CANAL DISASTER Engineer Once In Charge In Panama Condemns the Gatun Dam. Boston, Feb. 26. —A sweeping denunciation of the lock system for the Panama canal was made by Phillippi Jean Bunau-Varilla, formerly in charge of the old French canal, to the members of the Commercial club. The members listened with great Interest to BunauVarilla’s statement that the Gatun dam would not withstand the pressure. He declared that the giving way of the dam would destroy the canal in fifteen minutes. “Such a thing is not a dream,” he asserted, "for it is not only probable, but almost certain.” Bunau-Varilla declared that the only solution was a sea level canal, 500 feet wide and forty-five feet deep, to be dug by dredges.
