How to Make Whitewash.

Slack one-half bushel of unslacked lime with boiling water, keeping it covered during the process. Strain it and add a peck of salt dissolved in warm water. Add also three pounds of ground rice put in boiling water and boiled to a thin paste, one-half pound of powdered Spanish whiting and a pound of clear glue dissolved in warm water. Mix all these well together and let the mixture stand for several days. Keep the wash thus prepared in a kettle or portable furnace and when used put it on as hot as possible with painters’ or whitewash brushes; This whitewash has been found by experience to answer on wood, brick and stone nearly as well as oil paint, and it is much cheaper.—Home and Farm.

Thumps In Swine. Medicines cannot do much for pigs affected by thumps, says Professor Thomas Shaw in the New England Homestead. But to guard against constipation it may be well to give a physic, as castor oil or salts. The other remedial measures are the same as the preventive. They consist in enforcing exercise. This may be brought about by chasing the pigs about the pen with a switch when the sow is eating or shut away from them. A second method is to shut them away from the sow in a pen or box and allow them to worry for a time in theeffort to get back. The exercise which they get under such conditions will be of much benefit to them.

Corn Fodder and Ensilage. Answering a query as to the relative value as a dairy food of corn fodder and com ensilage, the Country Gentleman says: As regards digestibility the two are about the same, but in actual feeding tests ensilage has greater food value than the stalks, being more completely eaten. Corn ensilage is the better milk producer. In some Vermont station experiments 14,262 pounds of green corn, when Rifled, fed with a uniform dally allowance of hay and grain, produced 7,688 pounds of milk, while the same weight converted into ensilage and fed with the same daily ration of hay and grain produced . 8,525 pounds of milk.

Repairing Leak£ Roofs. In the case of old shingle roofs a leak may start at any time during the Winter. These leaks can be stopped by slipping a thin piece of tin about the same width ah a shingle under them from the outside. This is better than to use a new shingle, which may raise the edges of those about it and thus make the leak worse. Fahn « tress.
