DIES FROM CEREBRO-SPINAL MENINGITIS.

The three and a half year old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Jones of Union township, formerly of Rensselaer, died Sunday morning at 8 o’clock, of cerebro-spinal meningitis, after about a week’s sickness. A physician was not called until last Tuesday, when Dr. Miller was called. Thursday a consultation with another physician was held and it w T as agreed that the symptoms were those of cerebro-spinal meningitis. Dr. Homer Woolery of Bloomington, who has charge of the distribution in Indiana of the Meningetic serum, prepared at Rockefeller Institute in New York, was sent for by the attending physician, and came Friday morning to personally administer the serum. This was the fourth case in the state of Indiana and the second in Jasper county, the other case here, near Wheatfleld,'*having entirely recovered Pneumococcus, as the germ is called which produces pneumonia, but which can produce inflamation in other parts of the body, as in this case, was found, but a microscopic examination of fluid taken from the spinal column showed none of the germs which usually produce cerebro-spinal meningitis, therefore the anti-meningetic serum was of no use in this case. Drs. Miller and Wooley worked with the child Friday and Friday evening, its temperature Friday evening being 107. This serum has been used In several hundred cases both In the United States and Europe, and in all localities where used has reduced the mortality from about 80 per cent, to less than 16 per cent., showing that this serum has worked wonders with this dread disease. This is where taken in all stages, but where administered during the first three days it has reduced the mortality below 8 per cent. The making of serum for the treatment of these germ diseases ushers into use a new era in the treatment The boy had been sick some weeks ago with tonsiiitis and this sickness is Supposed to have been somewhat responsible for bringing on the disease from which he died, lowering the vitality sufficiently to allow the germs to start an inflamation in the coverings of the brain and spinal cord. , 400 dozen extra large, 3 pound Sanitary Cans, solid pack, Ripe Tomatoes, the same as others sell for 12 to 15 cents a can, for this sale, 3 cans for 25 cents.
