Convention Hears Report of Its Auditors. COMMITTEES APPOINTED Report Is That President Lewis Will Introduce Resolution to Appropriate Funds to Assist In Fighting th* Contempt Charge Upon Which Fortner Head of the Was Sentenced to a Prison Term.
Indianapolis. Jan. 22.—Th* United Mine Workers of America in convention here may come to the aid of John Mitchell today by appropriating funds to assist in fighting the charge of contempt upon which he was sentenced to jail by Judge Wright of the District of Columbia. Rumors about the hotels had it that the resolution to aid Mitchell would be introduced by President Lewis. Mitchell is expected to arrive today or tomorrow. The national auditors made their special report, showing the distribution of the organization’s funds. The auditors’ report showed the following: Total income, $806,882.49: total expenditures, $1,076,033.93; balance on hand Dec. 1, 1907, >834,890.81; balance on hand Dec. 1, 1908, >595,739.37. President Lewis after the report of the auditors announced his committees. He did not appoint a scale committee. The important committee chairmanships went to David Irvine of Central Pennsylvania, who was appointed to head the committee on officers’ reports; to Harry Bousfield of Kansas, who is head of the committee on resolutions, and to Jacob Ritter of lowa, who was made chairman of the const! tution committee. Edward Harris of the Shamokin anthracite district is the head of the committee on appeals and grievances. Harry Baker, Patrick Fitzsimmons and John Mossop, the national tellers and auditors, will serve as the transportation committee.
