IDLE EQUIPMENT.

Chicago, Qi., January 2. —At the opening of the New Year, when the railroads fervently hoped to have sufficient business to tax their capacity, they fine that they have on hand approximately $225,000,000 worth of idle equipment, to say nothing of the idle engines which are "white leaded” in the shops. This fact is shown by the semimonthly statement of the Committee on Car Efficiency of the American Railway Association, which was made public today. The statement discloses the fact that there is fully $46,000,000 worth of equipment idle in excess of value of the idle equipment of two weeks ago.
