HEARST AS TO HASKELL

Deolines to Correspond with a “Man of Haskell’s Character." New York. Sept. 22.—W. R. Hearst Ilka returned to this city from a campaign tour and soon afterwards issued a statement concerning the challenge of Governor C. N. Haskell, of Oklahoma. In his recent speeches Hearst bad charged that Ha«dteU, who is now treasurer of the Democratic nations’ committee, had sought. In 1899. to Influence Attorney General Frank S. Moflnett. of Ohio, to dismiss "certain" auits then pending against the Stand ard Oil company. In a telegram to Hearst Governor Haskell invited Hearst to publicly prove bis charges before a committee of editors. Hearst refuses to accept the suggestion of an editorial board, of arbitration in the following language to the Associated Press: “I address this communication to you. us I cannot have the slighest correspondence or controversy with a man es Mr. Haskell's character.” Then likening Haskell’s proposition to that of the burglar who caught red-handed, proposed to the jndge that the matter be arbitrated, Hearst proceeds: “The coart records, the complaint of the ex attorney general of Ohio, Mr. Monnett; the affidavit of the present assistant of the present attorney general of Ohio, Mr. Burnett; toe court records of toe state es Oklahoma in the Prairie'' Oil and Gas company case, accuse Mr. Haskell, and not I. “Mr. Haskell has bad many years in wtoicb to sue Mr. Monnett, If that gentleman committed a libel in aiming C. STATEMENT BY BAILEY How the Senator liooks at the Hearst Expose as to Himself Gainesville, Tex., Sept. 22.—When an Associated Press asked Senator Bailey what reply, if any, he desired to make as to what Hearst said regarding him in bis Memphis speech Saturday night. Bailey dictated the following words: “Assuming that the Sibley letter which Mr. Hearst read is genuine, and that I am the ‘Senator B.’ to whom ft refers, I am very glad that it has been given to the public, for It completely refutes a charge which my enemies have been making against me in this state for the last two years. They have been claiming that I am an attorney for the Standard Oil company, and insinuating that I have been friendly to It In matters of legislation.

“This letter distinctly shows that I am not their attorney, and it also distinctly shows that my position could not be changed to suit the Interest of the standard Oil company. The letter which Is claimed to have been w-rltten by Mr. Sibley suggests that he might arrange for Mr. Arebbold to talk to me. and Mr. Amhhold’s reply, as read by Mr. Heart, says that he would like tt tnlk to me. As a matter of fact Mr. Sibley never made to me the remotes! suggestion of a conference with Mr. Arelibold. and I never spoke to Mr. Archbold in my life about matters pending in congress or any other legislative lody.”
