FOR THE HOUSEWIFE
Hints For Cold Weather. Do not allow the lips to become moist when out in the cold, or they win crack. If a veil, is worn and the breath dampens the mesh, mop it gently every now and then with a handkerchief. Do not gaze too long at the snow when it glitters in the sunshine, for It not only hurts the eyes, but lines the forehead and maked^a frown. Do not sit down out of doors to rest when ice skating. Skate slowly with the wind instead. When chilled after a cold ride or walk, drink a glass of hot water, milk or hot lemonade; remove the shoes and stockings and rub the feet vigorously with a warm, rough towel; do not put them near a Are until the circulation has been restored or chilblains will result; rub cold cream in well, and after removing the greater part with a towel steam the face well to cleanse It and soften the skin after Jack Frost has been at work. To Thaw Frozen Pipes. When pipes become frozen during intensely cold weather they may be thawed by spreading on a piece of cloth a thick layer of unslaked lime, tying the cloth around the frozen pipe and throwing water over it The heat produced by combining the water and lime is sufficient to thaw the pipes. This is especially good in vertical pipes, on which it is usually difficult to apply external heat.—Good Housekeeping. To Clean Plumes. A good way to clean ostrich plumes, white or colored, easily is by soaking five minutes in warm, clean suds. Draw them lightly through the hand a few times and rinse in warm, clear water and dry by shaking over the stove; then recurl them by drawing each little barb over the dull edge of a knife or scissors. Thief Proof Hand Bag. Pickpockets will be up against a hard problem when they tackle a woman with a pocketbook equipped with the safety lock herewith shown, the Invention of a Pennsylvania man. This novel and useful construction of a handle can be employed in connection with any type or form of bag, valise or other portable receptacle. There is no possibility of the bag being opened without the knowledge of the person carrying it. The handle is in -two sec-
tions, which are hollow and have locking latches operating in connection with a catch in the interior of the bag. To open the bag the outer hollow portions of the handle are swung outward, releasing the latches. The bag is then opened in the usual way. Obviously it would be impossible to open the bag without removing the hand from the handle. Naturally pickpockets could not open the bag without detection. Shells Remove Clinkers. When the fire bricks have become covered with clinkers which have fused and adhere they may be cleaned by throwing oyster or dam shells in the fire box while the fire is hot and then allowing the fire to go out. The clinkers will then cleave off easily. Salt sprinkled on in the same way also will loosen them. Camphorated Oil. This Is splendid for cuts, bfuises, •ore throat, bunions and lame backs. Put a pint of kerosene into a quart bottle, add all the gum camphor it will dissolve and shake until the camphor is taken up by the oil. Then mix with it a half pint of sweet oil and 5 cents* worth of laudanum. Shake vigorously before using. Kentucky Potatoes. Pare and slice thin six large potatoes, as for frying. Throw in cold water for half an hour, then remove from the wtfl, wipe dry and put them in a shallow baking pan. Pour over them a cupful of milk seasoned with salt and pepper. Bake an hour; then pour over them half an ounce of butter and serve very hot Save Time In Ironing. Take a pail of warm water and a clean whisk broom to the yard when the clean clothes are dry upon the line. Before taking the clothes down sprinkle, remove from the line, roll and lay in the basket. The clothes then are ready for Ironing with but one handling. Scouring Mixture. One-half pound of soft soap, one-hall pound of sand and one-fourth pound of air slaked lime mixed to a paste. Use • little on brush and scour as usual, and your kitchen table and floor can be kept spotlessly clean and white. ,
