Mrs. Mary Greenfield, widow, of Samuel Greenfield, an old and well known resident of Union tp., died at her home in Parr Sunnight, of pneumonia, after a brief illness. /'Through the efforts of Dr. W. L. Mpyer, Andrew Carnegie has promised to loosen his pursestrings to the extent of SI,OOO to assist in purchasing a new $2,000 pipe organ for the Christian church here. Mrs. Frank Hardy returned to her home in Alva, Okla.. last week accompanied by her mother, Mrs. Marie Hopkins, who has fully recovered from her recent severe illness and will spend tbe remainder of the winter there. The Republican says:“For some reason none of our democratic exchanges seem to be pleased with the delegates elected to the republican national convention.” Judging from their utterances, mighty few of tbe republican exchanges are, either. George B. Jenkins aged about 25 years, died at his home in Barkley tp., last Friday of tuberculosis. A widow and one ohild about a year old are left. The funeral was held Monday and interment made in the Prater cemetery in that township. NtCharlie Weiss, formerly of Jasper county but for the past few years a resident of Wabash county, writes us in renewing his subscription to The Democrat and directs us to-ebange the address of bis paper to Nyhart, Mo., where he is moving this week. The Presbyterian church at Monon which was destroyed by fire on Tuesday night last week was a total loss, there being no insurance whatever on the building. As there bad been no tire in the churoh since the previous Sunday the origin still remains a mystery. The next number of the Library Lecture Course will be Opie Read, at the Christian church next Monday evening. Most people have read some of Opie Read’s works, which have a worldwide reputation, and a large attendance should be had at this lecture.
The republican county convention will be held Monday, March 16, and their judicial district convention to nominate a judge and prosecutor, at Roeelawn, March 23. As Roeelawn is in practically the only “wet” territory in the district it is appropriate that this convention be held there. Eric Lund, the contractor for the Kentland court honee, who has been trying to recover $3,000 whioh he alleges is due him on same, was again demurred out of court at Delphi this week, where his latest suit was taken on change of venue, He suffered a like fate here in the first snit brought. JNJnion tp. is steadily growing, and the Sohnltz families are doing their share toward populating it. Daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Shultz, Feb. 2; to Mr. and Mrs. Otto Schultz, Feb. 6; to Mr. and Mrs. Jnliuf Schultz, Feb. 8. The fathers are all brothers and the three girls were each born to them within six days/
