Only one more week for paying the spring installment of taxes. j —o—The Lake County jail at Crown Point has from forty to fifty prisoners confined therein all the time, and the prospects are not good for any dimunition of this number. . —o — r .. “ Marriage licenses issued: Edward J. Casey of Union tp., aged 21, occupation farmer, to Myra M. Longstretb, also of Union, aged 19, occupation housekeeper. First marriage for each. —o — New suits filed: No. 7161. The Hastings Industrial Co., vs. Greenip I. Thomas; suit on account. No. 7162. Mina Yount vs. Roy Yount; suit for divorce. Plaintiff alleges that she is and has been for the past six months a resident of Rensselaer, and was married to defendant June 17, 1900; that they separated July 1, 1906; charges failure to provide; that defendant is lazy, improvident, will not work, etc.; charges cruel and inhuman treatment, etc. —6— The final report of the drainage commissioners in the Howe or Wakarusa d(teh was filed last Friday afternoon, and ten days are now allowed for filing objections. The report places the total benefits of the main ditch at $48,556.79, and cost of construction at $34,583.42; the lateral benefits at $2,427.32, and cost of construction at $1,733.80; number of cubic yards of main ditch excavation 748,842, of which 246,183 yards has already been excavated in the old ditch which it follows Estimated cost of excavating balance is placed at 6 9-10 cents per cubic yard. The drainage commissioners costs are $1,045.
The circuit court has been grinding all week. The jury came Monday but were excused until Tuesday, when the case of Willeumier vs. Peck was heard from Walker tp., and a verdict rendered for $25 against defendant. The jury was excused Wednesday until yesterday, when a couple of Newton county cases were expected to be tried, but on agreement of parties the cases were sent back to Newton county and word was sent the jury not to come until Monday. Following are some of the more important proceedings since our last report: « Ex-judge T. F, palmer of Monticello appointed special judge to try the libel case of Abraham Halleck vs. F. E. Babcock; trial set for next Thursday. James Bullis et al vs. Mary Welsh et al; continued for term. Cases of George W. Troupe vs. Mary Frances and Adolph J. Roy vs. same, were by agreement of parties certified back to Newton county. Natavia White vs. Milton P. White et al; Chas. R. Peregrine, Chas. Stalbaum and T. F. Maloney appointed commissioners to partition real estate, to meet, qualify and report on or before May 2. Edward Mutchler and Albert Bellows appointed members of the county board of review. John F. Judy vs. Wm. L. Wood; plaintiff files affidavit for change of venue from this county.
