IS KELLOGG A BIGAMIST?
A woman claiming to be the wife of Ulysses B. Kellogg, the Canadian land swindler who caught Rensselaer people for about $4,000, and who is now serving a sentence of from two to fourteen years in the Michigan City prison, recently wrote to the prison officials from South Dakota, asking when Kellogg was to be hung, she having heard that he was under sentence of death for having murdered a man in Indiana. Kellogg has a wife in Brookston, it will be remembered, and if this woman is also his wife he may be prosecuted for bigamy when he gets out for his present crime. Concerning the matter the Michigan City News says: “Mrs. Nellie M. Kellog, of South Dakota, who wrote here some time ago making inquiry about Ulysses B. Kellog, now serving time in the penitentiary here, an account of whose first letter was given by The News, has written again making further inquiries. After reading the account in The News she is more than ever convinced that the culprit is her husband. She says that her husband left there some time ago pretending to go to Canada to take up land and said that he would send for his family. She has never heard from him since and knows of him only through newspaper dippings which have been sent to her. She says that she has been deserted and left to provide for herself and two small boys. She is very desirous of evidence for the identification of her deserting husband to be used in the courts of Dakota.”
