PEOPLE OF THE DAY

The Governor of New York. » Charles E. Hughes, ’governor of New York; who has little sympathy with the machine style of politics, is nevertheless a firm believer in party organization. In a recent speech the governor said: “Organization is essential to successful work, and nd man would expect

CHARLES E. HUGHES.

any political undertaking to be successful which Is not skillfully organized and wisely managed. But the success of political organization, important as . is practical management, will depend upon its ideals. No matter bow skillfully constructed or astutely led the people will smash any organization that is devoted to selfish interests.’* Governor Hughes came into prominence in 1904 as counsel for the legislative committee that Investigated the insurance companies In New York. In the fall of that year he was offered the nomination for mayor of New York on the Republican ticket, but declined. Last year he accepted the gubernatorial nomination and defeated William R. Hearst. He was the only candidate of his party on the state ticket to score a victory. For the Ladies. ▲ bill was passed by the house of representatives recently at the suggestion of Mr. James, the Kentucky peacemaker, gif tag. to a local chapter of the

Daughters of the American Tievolution the right to construct a drinking fountain on the lawn of the customs house at Paducah, Ky. The presentation of the bill led Mr. Payne, the Republican floor leader, to Inquire: “What is the need of a drinking fountain in Kentucky?” To which Mr. James, who is no slower of wit than of movement, responded: "This, I understand, is for the use of the ladies."

When It’s Wicked.

Surgeon General R. M. O’Reilly was talking about the abolition of the army canteen, In consequence of which, he holds, Intemperance has increased among soldiers. “The canteen,” he said, “was only harmful when it was badly administered. You know’ the dancing story? “A young man of sober views said to a pretty girl: “ ‘Do you think dancing is wicked?* “ ‘Yes,’ said she, *lf one dances as badly as you do.’ ”

Foe of Lancj Grabbers and Boodlers.

Francis 1. Heney, the man who secured the Indictment of Abe Rues. Mayor Schmitz and a number of their followers in San Franeiseo, Is a national figure. He gained fame as the foe of the land grabber. Appointed

Shortly after the disaster "in San Francisco, Heney was appointed assistant district attorney to investigate the charges of gigantic grafting by public officials and political bosses in that city. The indictments found show how well his work was done. Mr. Heney is a native of California and received most of his. education in San Francisco. When a young man he went to Arizona and for a time was attorney general of the territory.

How Many Ways.

At a young people’s party a boy proposed that each member of it take the line, “All day the smith shall stand for us beside the flashing forge,” and see in how many different ways it might be written without changing the sense. Suppose the boys and girls try it They will probably be surprised at the result One of the boys at the party referred to wrote the line in forty-two different ways, beginning each/time with the words ‘‘For us.” Wh«m it Is remembered that there are various other ways of beginning the line some notion of the possibilities of the case suggests itself.—Chicago News.

Desultory.

The origin of some words is queer, almost to the point of laughable. Take the word “desultory,” for example, which, as everybody knows, means disconnected. or jumping from one thing to another. Strange to say, we get it from the Roman circus, where ec-rtaln performers rode two or more horses and would leap from one to another. These were called “desultores” in Latin, and from that word came “desultor," which, in the same language, means one who goes from one thing to another, as in a rambling, disconnected speech. .......

Real Causes of Earthquakes.

While civilized man Is trying to grasp the meaning of an earthquake the uncivilized of all ages have long ago resolved their doubts. In Mongolia It is the breathings and skippings of a huge frog that cause the mischief, in China a gigantic dragon, In India a world bearing elephant in Celebes a hog and In other countries the scheme is varied by the Introduction of a bull and a tortoise. Earthquakes in Siberia are believed to be due to the frolics of mammoths who live in the center of the earth, while in Vancouver island It to the spirit of evil with his marshaled hosts of all the wicked people who have ever lived.

lodine Liniment.

A good liniment is made by putting equal parts of tincture of iodine and spirits of ammonia together and letting them remain so for twenty-four hours before using, shaking occasionally. It will then be clear as water and will neither blister nor stain when used. The Democrat for job work.

FOR THE HOUSEWIFE

Treatment For Corns.

The best treatment for corns is to soak them in warm water until the callous outer shell may be pulled off without pain. Then rub with vaseline. Do this at bedtime. In the morning fit a corn plaster over the trouble and wear it all day. The corn is caused by the pressure of the shoe, and when that is removed relief must follow. Wear the plaster until the callous spot disappears. Never cut a corn with knife or scissors. Serious injury, Sometimes resulting fatally, is often done in this way.

Formula For Skin Food.

An excellent skin food that any woman should be able to compound for herself is an ounce each of spermaceti and white wax* two of lanolin, four of sweet almond oil and two of cocoanut oil. Set the bowl in a pan of boiling water and let them melt, stirring all the time. When melted, take from the heat and beat with an egg beater, adding .very slowly thirty drops of tincture of benzoin. Have two ounces of orange flower water slightly warmed and add last of all, beating regularly.

Grass Stains.

Grass stains are dissolved by alcohol. If the stains are on white goods, cream of tartar and water will remove them; if on ecru, blue or any delicate shade, try alcohol and afterward wipe the spots with a clean white cloth moistened with water, then dry. Saturate the spots thoroughly with kerosene, then put into the washtub. Green stains from grass or other vegetable substance can be removed with molasses, then wash well In cold water and finish with soap and water.

Cornstarch tn the Laundry.

For starching sheer cotton and linen fabrics better results can be obtained with cornstarch than with the ordinary laundering starch. Dissolve a small quantity of the starch in a little cold water and pour it into a kettle of boiling salted water. As soon as it thickens remove from the stove and cool. Starch the thin pieces after they have been rung out of the bluing water. Dry, fold and Iron In the usual way. This method is a good one for sash curtains.

A Bonanza.

A certain western congressman has had disastrous experience In gold mine speculations. One day a number of colleagues were discussing the subject of speculation, when one of them said to the western member: “Tom, as an expert, give us a definition of the term ‘bonanza.’ ” “A bonanza,” replied the western man, with emphasis, “is a hole in the ground owned by a champion liar!”— Success.
