THE COURT HOUSE
Items Picked Up About the County Capitol. The bill increasing the mortgage exemption from S7OO to $1,400 was among those vetoed by Gov. Hanly. Under the new oounty treasurer’s salary law, as finally passed, the salary in this county is fixed at 82,250. —o— Senator McCain’s bill to place a bounty of ten cents each on “crow scalps” failed to become a law, and these dark hued birds can still steal the farmers’ corn and “caw” with impunity. , l 's-The bill intended to give Walker tp., another voting precinct, introduced through the personal efforts of Sheriff O’Connor, has been signed by the governor. The salient features of -the bill were published herein not long ago. —o — Taxpayers are finding that taxes are greatly increased again this year, as The Democrat stated months ago they had been. But what would they be if the wouldbe grafters bad their way and The Democrat was not here to stand between them and the tax-payer? There are several pairs of long itching fingers that would like to dip into the county treasury for one cause or another that are only held back through fear of exposure by this paper. —o — New suits filed: No. 7132. The taxpayers of Jasper county have been put to a great deal of unnecessary cost in the numerous unfounded libel cases filed against The Democrat editor in the past nine years, in the way of court costs, while the latter has had to pay several hundred dollars attorney fees iu fighting these score or more of never-ought-to-have-been-brought cases. You seldom or never hear of libel cases outside of Reusselaer. The object, no doubt, is only to try to break up the editor in paying attornev fees and thus put the paper out of business. Taxpayers, is it not time a stop was put to such contemptable proceedings. —o Kentland Democrat: The contract for the building of an eight miles’ system of macadam roads in Lincoln township was awarded to I. W. Monayhun, of Monon, for 822,780. Besides that of Mr. Monayhun, there was but one other bid offered for the job, and that was made by E T. Boyle, of Rose Lawn, whose figures were the same as those of Mr. Monayhuu, $22,780, which was the estimated cost of the system as submitted by the viewers. Because of their “tie” as to price Mr. Boyle withdrew in Mr. Monayhun’s favor. These roads were voted for at the general election last November, and Mr. Monayhun’s contract provides that their improvement shall consist of a bed of crushed rock, nine inches deeprook to be taken from Monon stone quarry—and that the work be completed by September Ist, next year.
