THE PROSPEROUS SENATOR.
In his speeches Senator Hemenway Is talking about the "great prosperity” which he says the Republican tariff "has brought to all •of ua.” Every man doubtless will settle for himself jnst how prosperous he is as well as the cause of his condition. Mr. Hemenway appears to havo done pretty well in congress, but what phase or stage of the tar'll affected him is not known. Last spring the Indianapolis Star, Republican state organ, printed the following from its special Washington correspondent: “Senator James A. Hemenway la* making good use of tye yaeht which his wealthy Baltimore relative recently placed at his disposal. Yesterday evening he gave an outing bn the yacht to a number of distinguished .popple. They enjoyed a 'cruise Mr down the Potomac, Speaker Cannon was the life of the party. The yacht Is a model vessel and fitted otit with all of the accessories of the most modern pleasure craft. Thb Indiana Senator Is planning a similar outing sos a number of correspondents before congress adjourts." A few days later the same paper printed the following 'tern in its special Washington correspondence: “Controller Tracewcll of the t treasury has been confined to his home for several days as the result of too luxurious living on Senator Hemenway*s yachtj Ho .is now- abl,e to be about, although his stomach Is still very sore. "On the yachts” said he, “we had an j menu, consisting pt orgbs, cucumbers. cleriMesiarufcbidkeri. 'The senator’s hospitality was too powerful, and It overcame me. 1 1 helped myself plentifully to the : ajljtoratlve bill, of fare, and It put me out of commltslbn.” s Thus It appears that Mr. Hemenwars ifaea have been cast in pleasant places since he has been fa Washington. He nkturally feeds “prosperous.** IWost pedple feel that way who have private yachts “fitted out With' all the aoaeesoriee of the most modern pleasure craft”

Shaw, of lowa, secretary of the treasury fa the Roosevelt cabinet, into the state to talk to a certain class of the people as a “standpatter,” a high tariff-taxer and a trust defender. Governor Cummins, of the same state, is to be brought to Indiana to talk to another class as a tariff reformer. It was as a tariff reformer that Cummins, was recently renominated for governor by a convention that hlgsed Shaw from the convention hall. The Republican state managers are playing ihimble-rlg politics. But the trusts don’t care by what method Republican congressmen are elected, for they know by experience that they can handle them after they get to Washington.
