27TH REGIMENT COMING
On a Long March From Ft. Sheridan To Indianapolis. On Sunday the 22th our city will probably be invaded by a large body of U. S. troops today or tomorrow. Eight companies of the 27th U. S. Infantry, accompanied by the regimental band and a wagon train of twenty vehicles started last Sunday from Ft. Sheridan, north of Chicago, to march to Fort Benjamin Harrison near Indianapolis. Two more companies from Fort Brady, Mich., were to join them there Tuesday. Their line of march as yet is conditional, but as now laid down they were supposed to be at Crown Point Thursday night and touch at Rensselaer Sunday and Monticello about Tuesday. The purposes of this march and others similar, which are now under way, are to give the soldiers practice to test equipments, and rations and to make the people of the nation better acquainted with one of their institutions. It is planned to traverse the 237 miles from one fort to the other in sixteen days. There are about 700 men and it seems to be the purpose to camp near towns where supplies can be bad readily. The men are moving in heavy marching order, carrying packs that weigh from sixty to ninety pounds. These are made up of three days’ rations, 90 rounds of ball ammunition, clothing, the one-half of a pup tent and the regulation gun. It is understood they will camp at the stock farm. If they do, our people may be treated to a band concert, as they are accompanied by a full regiment brass band.
