Born, May 2i, to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hicks, a son, Miss Alice Tharp visited in Rensselaer last week. Miss Ethel Green is attending the Terre Haute normal. Decoration day was observed here with the usual exercises. Mr. and Mrs. Wm, Townsend were Chicago visitors last week. W. R, Puckett of Lafayette was visiting his son Will here last week. Mr. and Mrs. John Ulm are visiting their son Joe and wife in Jennings. Co. J. W. Jacks has bought an interest in the 8. H. Kuster junk and poultry business. Quite a number Remington "old vets” attended the G. A. R. encampment at Lafayette last week. Dorr Blood landed a 5 pound pickerel from Carpenter’s creek, east of the school building, one day last week. Prof. J. B. Fagin of the Goodland schools has accepted the superintendency of the Bedford schools and will move to that place soon. Remington and Carpenter township are talking stone roads quite strongly, and the sentiment seems to be generally favorable to the proposition. Ira Yeoman, Will Lock, D. V. Garrison, H. Paxton and a few others from here attended the democratic county convention at Rensselaer Saturday.
Geo. Hascall has traded his lot on South Ohio street, south of the Pothuisje office, for the Stnckfaden restaurant in Rensselaer and is now in possession of same. Charlie Hascall will have principal control of the restaurant. Geo. Vincent, who moved from near here to Michigan some time ago, was burned out of house and home in the forest fire there recently. Their household goods were destroyed after they had removed them from the house to save them. They are now living with Jerome Clark at Harris, Mich., where they moved since the fire. The republicans of Benton county have nominated the following county ticket: Clerk, J. R. Turner; Treasurer, Frank Padgett; Sheriff, Charles Waggoner; Surveyoi, C. B. Wicker; Coroner, C. 8. Comley; Commissioners, Ist dist , Stacy Scott; 2d dist., John V. Bartoo; County Councilmen, Bryce Ferguson, Frank Summers, Lewis LaFountain, George Jennings, James L, Sheetz, W. H. Connell, John M. Wilson. The democrats will bold their county convention to day.
fietvland Oats and onions look fine after the rain. Miss Nellie Wallace visited relatives at Gifford Sunday. Henry Dahncke was at Francesville Saturday on business. Maggie Richmond is visiting friends at Pleasant Grove for a few days.
Harvey Casto and Mr. Daniels of Rensselaer were here on business Sunday. Frank Stanton and Abe Aery were at Kersey a couple of days last week on business.
Mrs. T. M. Callahan, and daughters Ruth and Cecelia are visiting friends at Bradley, 111., this week. A. Z. Zook who has been living on Beach Ridge for the past two years, moved to the Hinkle Island farm last week.
Mr. Shigley, who has been overseeing dredge No. 3, has been transfered to the dry land boat in Lake county, on the northern extension of tbeC. & W. V. Ry.
Fair OaKj We got a fine and very much needed rain daturday night. Sam Thornton went to West Virginia last week to attend Holiness meetings. Mrs, Campbell of Chicago is visiting Mr. and Mrs. Blair south of town this week.
The pickle company received another shipment of barrels last week whtch are to be tilled with pickles. J. J. Lawler of Chicago and Delofi Thompson ot Rensselaer were out on tbeir ranch near here Sunday. Simon Kessick of the east part of the township, with his family, visited with Al Helsel's family here Sunday. Totten, Tolen and Cooper of Indianapolis spent Sunday with Tolen & Hillis on the ranch a few miles west of here.
Mrs. Laura Carder of Jordan tp,, visited her parents Mr. and Mrs. Lean der Kesler here a couple days the later part of the week. Mrs. Proudly who has been under the doctors care for the past two weeks with a billious attack, was able to get out to church Sunday. Cal Borroughs, who has been at Brook working on the terracotta tile building, got a nb broken and returned home Friday lor a few days.
Tom Joiner, who has been up in the regions of Lowell for some time helping to build a dredge boat, was home over Sunday with his family. Leander Kesler has equipped himself with a fine new outfit and will soon go out on the road in the profession of patent medicine peddler. We wish him a success.
Mrs. P. W. Liston of Brook, who had been visiting her sisters near Indianapolis, while on her wav home stopped off here Friday and stayed all night with her daughter, Mrs. Ed Gobel. Postmaster Thompson attended the G. A. R. encampment at Lafayette last week and reported a good time. While he was gone his good wife got busy and got the paper hangers at it and papered and scrubbed up the office and made it look neat and tidy.
The.meetings that have been going on here the past three weeks conducted by the three evangelists, Williams, Douglas and Jackson, closed Sunday evening, scored a wonderful victory for Christ as there was quiet a number started on the road to that upper and better land where all is peace. Rniman. Elmer Charles was seen in our streets Saturday, William Ballinger and family visited Mark Ott Sunday. John and Nance Kolb called on their father last Sunday. The Ladies' Aid held a meeting at Mrs. Wm. Hoile’s Thursday. There will be services at St. Michael’s church next Sunday at 10 a, m. Mrs. Earl Osborne returned from Chicago accompanied by her father, Mr. Steege. The dance at Kniman was well attended. The weather didn't seem to bother the crowd any. Mrs. William Gough of Wheatfield Center, called on her parehts, Mr. and Mrs. Canby, last week, The Saturday and Sunday rain was welcome in our district, but the* chilly weather could have stayed away, N. G. Hoehn and Mr. Smith of Wheatfield called at the Springer ranch Monday. Call again George, but don't forget the pop. Arrangements have been completed for the 4th of July celebration at Kniman. Laura Yeoman returned home Saturday from a few day’s visit with relatives at Fair Oaks. Mrs, h. L. Yeoman and daughter Ethel are visiting her father, W. L. Bringle at this writing. Mr, and Mrs, John Bill and family, Mrs. Jesse Bringle and son Merle, W. L Bringle and niece Cbristenia Floch visited George Bill’s Sunday.
Stoutjburg. Ben Grube was a Kniman goer Saturday eve. Earl Micheals made a flying trip to Kankakee Wednesday. Miss Hattie Warren spent Monday with Mayme Grube of Kersey. Frank Grube has returned home after a two weeks stay near Momence. Wm. Grube, Sr., took dinner with Wm. Whited and family Thursday,
The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Johnson is sick at this writing. ( O. Barbee and wife of Tefft have moved in the Pierre property al this place. Messrs. Marr and Potter of the Nave ranch were callers here Thursday eve. Mrs. David Pierre and daughter of Kniman was seen in our burg Thursday, Rachel and Thelma Antrim spent Tuesday afternoon with Loretta Whited. Quite a number from nere attended services at Wheatfield Decoration day. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Chapman of Kankakee are guests of the latter’s father, Wm. Grube, south of town. Will Wenrick, who is staying near Momtnence, spent Saturday and Sunday with A. Woods and family.
America. Charles and James Wood were Lee goers Tuesday. Roy Williams and his father were in Monon Monday. Born, one day TaSl week, to Mr. and Mrs. Ben Denton, a daughter. Mrs. Geo. Wood and son James were Monon goers Monday afternoon. Geo. Foulks and Earl were in Monon Monday night for band practice. On Friday of last week several of the neighbors met and cleaned the church. Henry Beaves, Peter Foulks and Mrs. Effie Underwood were at Monon Wednesday. Ludd Clark and Harvey Rogers moved George Coffman onto the Mrs. Jacob Johns farm Tuesday. One day last week, as Jake McDonald was in the field weeding his corn, his best horse sett dead. Pine Gro-de We are having fine weather. Jimmie Britt is some better at this writing. James Torbel was a Rensselaer goer Sunday. John Dale and wife returned to their home in Montgomery county Tuesday. George Snow and family spent Sunday with John Hurley and family, south of Rensselaer.
Miss Maggie Torbet is at home for a week's visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Torbet. There will be Children's day exercises in the afternoon on Sunday, June 3 o’clock at Independence. John Dale and Miss Flossie Torbet were married Sunday evening at 8 o’clock at the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Torbet, in the presence of several neighbors and friends. Rev. Blackburn of Aix peiformed the cerembny.

Lewi* and wife spent Sunday afternoon at Edmund Walker's. Mr. and Mrs. G. B. Lewis spent Sunday with Alfred Randle and family.
Harry Reed and wife spent Saturday and Sunday with relatives in Gifford. Bessie Odom and Edith Burns called on Rubieand Ethel Gratner Sunday. John Newcome and Viola Reed were guests of Agnes Potts Sunday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs, J. F. Payne and son spent Sunday afternoon with Wm, Gratner. The next time, Agnes, don’t be so sleepy and answer the telephone when M, G. calls up. Morton and Clifford Wells spent Saturday and Sunday with their sister, Mrs, Dan Robinson, near Winamac.
OaK Groove Mrs. Charley Pettet is spending a few days in this vicinity. Mr. and Mrs. Reed McCoy spent Sunday with his brother, A. E. McCoy. Mrs. Robert Hilton called on Mrs. Lincoln Braddock Tuesday afternoon. John Smith and family of Kentland, spent Thursday with his daughter, Mrs. Robert Hilton. Miss Mae Pettet returned home Friday for her summer vacation, after attending school in Rensselaer. Mr. Richmond of Newland, was in our vicinity Monday trying to get signers for pickle raising this year.
Saum’j 'Bridge Wm. Hallier sold a horse Tuesday. Wm. Muffley went to Kouts Wednesday. Wm. Dittman is constructing a new fence. Jack Frost bit the corn in several places. Ed. Hall of Kouts drove through here Sunday. Wm. Hallier end wife called on Bush’s Wednesday evening. C. J. Kern of Valpq has been out on a fishing trip this week.' John Kyes of Hebron, the horse doctor was through this part last week, Del. Harte and Frank Downs of Hebron were at the bridge Sunday. A. I. Bush has a sick horse; he seems to have bad luck with horses of late. Charley Lane, the marshal of Kouts, was fishing at the river Wednesday. N. O. Lyon has one of the finest pieces of corn in the northeast corner.
New neighbors in this part but they didn't stay long; just long enough to trade horses with Jim Gilbreath. The rain we have been looking so anxiously for, has come. It saved the oats crop in many places and was a great benefit to the hay and corn. The basket and hoop factories have purchased the swamp timber and will begin cutting shortly. This will be a boom to the northern part of Jasper regarding labor.
Surrey A nice ram last Saturday and Sunday. Crops are looking fairly well hereabouts. Mrs. Fiddler called on Mrs. Frank Kenton Tuesday. We will soon have some bridge moving to do for the dredges. Mr. Coen was out looking after some fence repairing the first of the week. The rain Decoration day hindered several from attending that had expected to.
The young people are taking cjuite a good deal 01 interest in the Sunday School.
Some parties are having to replant their corn. It is supposed the fertlizer used was so strong that it baked the germ of the corn. The Farmer dredge is busy day and night. They have two nice crews of good quiet hands and are making a fine ditch. We wish good results to follow all the way. C. L. Parks has returned from Argos, where he was called to see his mother, who was taken dangerously sick while on a visit to that place. She iJT much better now, The results of a non-denominational meeting at our neighboring town, Fair Oaks, is twenty precious souls have commenced a new life and a Wednesday evening prayer meeting has commenced. How towns will prosper when saloons have gone dry.
J~an Pierre Daniel Myer gave this city a visit this ' week ; • —— — Otto Doiezal is learning telegraphy at the Monon depot. Fred Weinkauf was out trying the gravel roads Wednesday. We have had beautiful showers, That will bring crops and many flowers Edward Sands and Miss Nellie Stalbaum tried the new automobile Thursday evening. Mr. Christenson, of English Lake, gravel road superintendent, was in this vicinity Tuesday. The high school graduates at San Pierre were Isetta Kays, May Favey and Otto Nutzmam Miss Nellie Stalbaum, one of Jasper county's successful teachets, visited the Valparaiso university last week. Prof. J. W. Dunn delivered an excellent address at the high school commencement given at San Pierre, May 18. The Messrs. John Heilman, John and Edward Banke, John Batske, Garfield and Blaine Clawson, Mainard Kilgore, Fibbs Prettyman, Tressemer, Marion Sands and your correspondent are among the gravel haulers this week.
