The kitchen roof at Peter Hordelpan, Srs., west of town, caught fire from a defective flue Wednesday forenoon, but was fortunately discovered before much damage was done, and extinguished with a few buckets of water. /C. A. Roberts was called to Westport, Ind., Saturday by the death of his aged mother, who died Saturday morning at the home of her son, "Edward Roberts. She was 86 years of age and had been in poor health for some time. She was well known here where she had resided a part of the time for the past quarter of a century. An enthusiastic railroad meeting was held at Medaryville on Tuesday of last week, to talk over the proposed Chicago, Indianapolis & Evansville road. A representative of the proposed road was in attendance and talked of the plans of the same. He stated that the road was sure to be built;that it would be a double track road, one track for passenger traffic and onejfor freight, that the company asked for no subsidy, but did. want free right-of-way 100 feet wide. Committees were appointed at this meeting to ascertain what right-of-way would cast through the different townships, where it will not be donated, which it is thought most of it will be, and J. P. Ryan, Theodore Phillips and Elmer Pullins were appointed for Gillam tp., this county.
\ Peter Hordeman returned last Thursday from near Hullsmith, Texas, where he has been working in Will Donnelly’s sawmill for several months. Peter thinks Will has a good thing there in his lumber business; says he is employing 50 to 60 men all the time, about one-half of whom are negroes, that he owns the dwellings (about 20) where his mill is located, which is 1| miles from Hullsmith. He also owns the store or commissary, as it is called, and will soon have a postoffice there, the application for same having already been granted. Logs are hauled to the mill on a dummy railroad and a small locomotive is used for the purpose. A gang of section men are employed all the time by Will in extending the track to different parts of the forest. Peter says there is some very fine farming country in Texas, but right where Will is the land is practically worthless.
