CHICAGO TRACTION MATTERS

Mayor Secures Council Banking at Last—Com tMuiies Apply lor an Injunction in a Big Case. Chicago, Jan. 19.—The city council for the Hist time has shown a majority for city ownership of street railways, and it will be put to the citizens next April to decide whether they want to borrow $75,000,000 and go into the street car business or not. Both of the mayor’s ordinances undertheprovisions of the Mueller bill were passed by the council by small majorities. Another phase of the street railway fight is an application for uu injunction filed by the street railway companies restraining the city from bringing suit against the companies for violation of an ordinance against overcrowding street cars. The enforcement of such on ordinance at Chicago by anything less than a platoon of police would cause a riot. The companies are held liable by tbe ordinance to a fine of $25 to SIOO for each offense, and tbe total of tbe suits is enormous.
