James Speyer, who recently gave $50,000 to establish the Theodore Roosevelt professorship of American history and institutions at the University of Berlin, while primarily a man of finance takes a deep interest in public affairs. In numerous ways has Mr. Speyer demonstrated his Interest in educational matters and in practical philanthropies for the aid of the poor. In the world of trade Mr. Speyer Is known as the head of the banking house of Speyer & Co., as a trustee of the Central Trust company of New
York, of the German Savings bank, the Mutual Life Insurance company and ns a director In the Pacific Mail Steamship company and the Southern Pacific Railroad company. Mr. Speyer Is also treasurer of the Provident Loan society. In society Mr. Speyer and his wife are popular, and Mrs. Speyer takes a deep Interest in college settlements and clubs for working women. James Speyer was born In New York In 1861 and Is the son of Gustavus Speyer, who, with his brother Philip, founded the banking house of Philip Spoyer & Co. In 1845. He was educated at Frankfort-on-the-Main and In 1885 returned to New York to become a partner In the concern of Speyer & Co. He has since become a conspicuous figure In financial circles. Several years ago he and Mrs. Speyer gave SIOO,OOO to the Teachers’ college to build a model public school in connection with the college.
