Situation at Santiago, Chile.
Santiago, Chile, Oct. 25.—The disturbances here caused by the opposition of the people to the import tax on Argentine cattle continued all day and did not cease until late at night when a small detachment of troops arrived here and a few shots were fired. Almost everything which could be destroyed was wrecked, including the city lamps, public seats, monuments and windows everywhere. The situation as this dispatch is filed is comparatively calm, but ths banks and business houses still remain closed.
Something New in Insurance. New Y’ork, Oct. 25. —Charles J. Smith, who said he was a press agent in the employ o? the Mutual Life Insurance company, testified before the legislative life Insurance investigating committee that his duties were to counteract the injury done to the Mutual Life Insurance company by the publication of news stories. He said his salary was SB,OOO and that he paid $1 a line for dispatches sent by the telegraphic news bureau.
