His Hand on the Throttle.
At North Judson the democrats and rep üblicans held a joint convention and nominated a town ticket composed of both democrats and republicans. More and more the people are becoming awake to the fact that state and national issues have nothing to do with local government, a nd are breaking away from partisan ties and voting for the best men regardless of the party brand they bear.
Governor Hanley thinks the public funds, State, county, etc., should be loaned out to banks, on ample security, and the interest derived therefrom be turned into the respective treasuries. The governor is borrowing democratic thunder on this proposition, and we would remind him that the democratic treasurer of Marshall county has practiced this plan during his term, although under no obligations to do so, and has each year turned into the county treasury a sum almost equal to his salary.
Jerry Simpson, who gained the soubriquet of “Sockless Jerry” thro ugh a newspaper joke, stating that be wore no socks, died at Wichita, Kan., Monday after several months sickness. He was three times elected to congress from Kansas by the populists assisted by democrats and became one of the most noted and prominent figures in that party. Through fortunate investments in Kansas lands he became wealthy, and leaves quite an estate. He was a veteran of the civil war, and at the time of his death was 63 years of age
The Rensselaer Republican, in an editorial endorsing foot ball, with certain reservations, says that "such amusements as swimming, boating and hunting each probably claim twenty victims to foot ball one,” and says that though "a number of severe and lamentable accidents have occurred here among players,” there have been no fatalities, there have been several deaths in the county from hunting, boating and swimming, etc. Now lets analyize this statement a little: There are probably hundreds of people in Jasper county out hunting, swimming or boatimg every day in the year. Rensselaer and St. Joseph’s college are the only places where a football eleveneleven, mind you—have been regularly playing. The season lasts but two months and not an average of a game a week is usually played. There but eleven men playing on a side, and a game seldom lasts over one hour. We think this is enough, and that everyone must agree that there is no form of sport or amusement that is so dangerous to life and limb as our modern football. It should either be reformed or abolished altogether.
As Secretary Cortelyou has not resigned as chairman of the Republican national committee, it is fair to presume that l*resident Roosevelt still wants to keep his band on the political throttle and dictate to bis successor, or— How about that third term? It may be necessary for the president to accept a third term to keep the Republican party in power, or to complete the Panama canal, or to wield the big stick and keep the nations in order, or because he and his think the country could hardly get along without them. Oh, there are a hundred reasons! And any one is good enough If the voters only think so.
