Cara’of Canary Bird*. Put slippery elm bark In the drinking vessels. For colds give a canary one drop of sweet oil at a dose. A hit of fig or apple and for one of the larger birds a live worm will prove a tonic. Taste the bird seed yourself to be sure it Is pure. Never use hemp seed. Be careful to dry thoroughly the perches after cleaning the cage. Damp perches are the chief cause of rheumatism. Thoroughly wash out all the vessels with hot water every day. The aphae. the parasite that forms In water left standing in a cage, is the deadliest enemy of bird life. If the bird shows signs of general debility, as molting ojit of season, give him iron in much greater strength than he can get from a rusty nail lu the water and counteraetjThe one bad effect of Iron with sulphur. Keep the bird out of drafts. It Is best to hang his cage about five feet froth the floor. If hung higher than that he will be too warm, for heat rises, and the hottest place In a room is near the celling. Fev the Medicine Cheat. No housekeeper should be without these few simple remedies: Ipecacuanha as an emetic in sudden attacks of croup, bronchitis or whooping cough. Surgeon’s adhesive plaster for wounds; also good for softening hard corns and if applied soon enough a preventive of blistered heels, the result of wearing low cut shoes. Dry mustard for plasters and talcum powder to apply when the plaster is taken off. Equal parts of linseed oil and lime water beaten until they are an emulBion, the very finest remedy for burns and scalds. The mixture should be spread evenly on linen with a knife and bound on the Injured spot It Is a sure cure. Bicarbonate of soda. A small portion dissolved in a glass of hot water will relieve even a severe attack of Indigestion or bilious colic. A large dose, a teaspoonful, acts as an emetic and is very good and cleansing and healing to the stomach. one end, with nn additional handle pivoted between a pair of lugs attached to the upper handle. A movable bar with a jaw blade at the end Is mounted underneath the upper handle. The jaw blades are placed over the edge of the pan, and by squeezing the handles together the inner jaw blade is brought into contact with the pan, and with a firm grip the paa can be carried anywhere desired with no danger of burning. To Overcome Insomnia. The fundamental cause of sleeplessness is worry or overfatigue. Indigestion often results, and the blood is forced to the brain. In this case the feet should be bathed In right hot water for a few minutes before retiring. Sometimes, however, the wakefulness Is from a directly opposite cause, and in this case the feet should be elevated a little by resting them on a pillpw and the head laid flat, so forcing the blood to the head. Massaging gently the temples and back of the neck is an excellent cure for nervousness, and so soothed the patient will soon drop off to sleep. Salt Far the Teeth. Common table salt is excellent for cleaning the teeth ami removing tartar from them. It also hardens tender gums. Wet the brash and apply to fihe salt, which should be kept In a little glass dish on the washstand and used as any other dentifrice. Onion Otael. Onion gruel la excellent for cold, and many invalids ase food of It. Slice down a few onions and boil them In A pint of milk. Stir in a sprinkle of oatmeal and a little salt. 801 l till the onions are quite tender. Sup rapidly and go to bed. The Dusting Cloth. The best and cheapest duster Is a small wad of cotton batting.
