Miss Hazel Lamson returned Wednesday from Marion, where she has been attending business college. Charles Wiltshire, of. Chicago, is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Wiltshire, for a couple of weeks, The largest stock to select from on reliable clothing, shoes and oxfords at a great reduction until July 4, at the Chicago Bargain Store. A. D. Washburn returned Wednesday night from his trip up in the Alberta country of Canada. None of the party invested in any land there but may do so later in the season when they expeot to pay that country another visit. Sherman Renicker has shipped his household goods to Donaldson, Minn., and will follow with his family in a few days. Sam and Vern Thornton, who have also bought farms in that locality, expect to move out there in August. The Democrat man expects to attend the meeting of the Northern Indiana Editorial Association next Thursday and Friday at Rochester, and requests that the correspondence and copy for ads be sent in as early in the week as possible.
Thomas Harris, the Remington real estate agent, was in the city Wednesday with some prospective buyers for a big farm near Rensselaer. Tom says the prospects are better for a big business in the real estate line this fall than for a number of years. The Epworth League convention at Remington was well attended from all over the district and a very interesting meeting was held. About twenty-five delegates from Rensselaer were in attendance. The convention next year will be held at Morocco. Nicholas Archer, who was sent to the asylum from this county in January, 1903, and later released, was brought down from Wheatfield Monday evening, he having again gone insane. Owing to the crowded condition of the asylum he has not been taken away as yet.
Monticello Journal: Mr. C. E. Nowels of Rensselaer has rented A. R. Orton’s tenant property on North Railroad street and will move his family here in a few days. Mr. Nowels will superintend the erection of the new elevator that Loughry Bros, are building at Idaville.
Uriah Nicholas, a well known teamster of Monticello, was killed at that place Saturday while unloading sawlogs which he was hauling to the railroad station for shipment. In some way one of the logs rolled off the wagon onto him, crushing him so badly that he died in short time. He was an own cousin of Wm. Huffman of this city.
E H. Blake, formerly of Carpenter tp., but now of Wabash county, was in the city on business Tuesday. Mr. Blake, was called to Remington Sunday by the death of bis father, Isaac Blake, an old resident of Jasper county. He was here for the purpose of probating his father’s will, he being named as executor of the estate. * * -
Referee Bowers notified the parties concerned yesterday that the various claims against the McCoys would be beard at Rensselaer on June 23d at 9 o’clock in the morning. These are the case on which Judge Anderson heard arguments on June 6th and 7th at Indianapolis. They were referred back to Referee Bowers. The McCoy cases on the docket of the superior court here will not be reached this term—Hammond Tribune.
A large force of men and teams have been busy all week excavating for for the new Murray-Long-Haus block. Ralph Fendig’s building, it was found, was some six inches over ou the Haus lot, and it has been cut down on the east side and will be repaired for temporary use until Mr. Feudig builds. As he will own one-half the wall in both the Harris and Haus buildings it will be a simple thing to oloee up the ends and put a roof on when he gets around to it. It is reported that a couple of Rensselaer women who went to the country one day last week to pick gooseberries got into a fracas, each objecting to the other’s presence, and before they were quieted down they had pulled each others bats to peices and the gooseberry bushes were strewn with hair from the beads of irate females. The employer will endeavor to see that but one gooseberry picker at a time appears on the scene hereafter, so there will be no more confusion of his dates.
