OBITUARY.
Medaryville Advertiser: Joseph J. Frederick was born in Morgan county, Indiana, in the month of February, 1835, died at Valparaiso, Ind., Monday evening, March 6, 1905, of pneumonia, aged 70 years. When a good man passes away to the beyond, he is not lost to his friends and to the community in which his life has been spent. His works still speak and often with greater effect than during his life. J. J. Frederick was a leader in the church and in all the movements for the uplifting and betterment of humanity. He was one of the founders of the Christian church in Medaryville and his best years were spent in devotion to its interests. His home was always open to the preachers, lecturers, etc., and together with his good wife, he welcomed them all. His many friends here regret their inability to pay their last respects to his memory by attending the funeral, which was held at Valparaiso on Thursday afternoon. The sympathy of this whole community goes out to his sorrowing wife and family. A good man, indeed, has gone. Mr. and Mrs. Ben Oglesby and daughter, Miss Sadie, and Mr. and Mrs. George Maddox, of this place, attended the last sad rites. Mesdames Oglesby and Maddox are sisters of the deceased. Mr. Frederick came to this county in the year 1857. For some years he taught school, afterwards he farmed and finally moved to Medaryville, entering into the mercantile business and which for many years he followed. As said before, during this time he was an honest church worker and an enthusiast in the furthering of the prohibition cause. About two years ago he sold his business and most of his property here and moved to Valparaiso, where he has lived since. He leaves a widow, two daughters and one son —Mrs. Olive Denger and J. R. Frederiok, of Valparaiso, and Mrs. C. £. Hershman, of Rensselaer.
